PowerBuoy - Surface & Subsea Positioning
Insight Marine were pleased to provide positioning support and post construction inspection services during the installation of GBA anchors for Ocean Power Technologies' PowerBuoy project, (Santona, Spain). The device is designed to convert ocean wave energy into useable electrical power for utility-scale grid connected applications. The PowerBuoy can be deployed in arrays scalable to 100’s of megawatts.

Their requirement for surface positioning was fulfilled using differential GPS techniques coupled with the QINSy navigation software. There was also a need for subsea visual inspection of the GBAs in situ using the Outland 1000 ROV. Subsea positioning was maintained using the AAE Easytrak USBL system. ROV footage proved invaluable in the appraisal of the condition of the anchors in their as-built positions.
