Two South West companies involved with EMEC operations

Precise, efficient, reliable – Insight Marine Projects Ltd is continuing to provide professional, tailored support to the marine renewables industry in challenging environments. The wave and tidal sectors are providing plenty of opportunities for Insight Marine Projects Ltd. This summer two projects in particular highlighted the professional and technical capabilities of this Cornish based company – working alongside Mojo Maritime Ltd of Falmouth during the installation of a drilled-in monopole foundation for Bauer Renewables Ltd, and the simultaneous recovery and subsequent redeployment of Atlantis Resources Corporation's AR1000 tidal turbine, both at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) test site in the Orkneys.
Using precision surface and subsea positioning techniques mobilised at short notice to ships such as the North Sea Giant, Olympic Zeus and the Boa Deep C, Insight Marine Projects were able to monitor all relevant positions of vessels, tugs, ROVs, dynamic offsets (such as heave compensated crane hooks) and drilling/lifting equipment in real time.
Critical to the success of each project were the innovative networking methods for broadcasting position data across the vessel for real-time display to ROVs, marine ops and client offices. For example, rugged tablet PCs were used to provide a mobile feedback solution via WiFi for back deck operations, thereby freeing crew from traditional navigation displays established in control containers. Insight Marine were able to respond to specific client requests such as the development of an early warning system to notify surveyors/DP operators of a potential run-off situation; this system was seen as critical in an environment where tidal currents can reach 4m/s and response times to such an event are measured in seconds.
