Panama SEG7 Repair Complete
Date: 2 Oct 2009
Insight Marine Projects' contract with Underwater Technical Services to supply surface positioning equipment and personnel for the shore-end repair work on the PAC-7 communications cable has now been completed successfully.

Tug management was undertaken using the QINSy navigation software over a wifi telemetry link between the vessels. The wifi equipment was being trialed as an alternative to traditional UHF data links, the increased bandwidth allowed the use of features such as the Windows Remote Desktop Connection.
Control over the remote systems from the central survey position reduced the requirement to have personnel onboard the tugs during anchor handling operations.
Cable repairs project on the SEG7 PAC (Pan-American Crossing) cable system in Panama were coordinated by the main contractor, Underwater Technical Services Ltd. on behalf of the client, Global Crossing Ltd. The Pan-American cable was first installed in 1999 and provides an important link to the Caribbean and Latin America.
